Hope you'll be interested in this posting attached below.
Well said and my heart-felt salute to what you have pointed out in the
posting. Indeed, Ng Chao-tong's name and works must be more broadly
disseminated among Formosan community both abroad and on Island. Two years
ago in October when I visited Formosa, I was amazed in finding a book on
western opera written and donated by him to the NTU and exhibited in the
Main Library. Honestly, I knew him only on his political activities at the
time but he is more than that. BTW, I know him only by name, met him once in
Formosa, but still don't know in person.
Recently, I have started to re-read "Taiwan. A New History" edited by Murray
A. Rubinstein (M. E. Sharpe, Inc. 1999.) I came to Harry J. Lamley's article
covering the period, 1895-1945. I am amazed Lamley cited many times on Ng's
writing on the history of that period. I have no doubt his deep awareness
and knowledge of that period. But how many Formosan know Ng? Perhaps, some
Formosans may still remember he was the only one who, being a senior member
of the CBS Advisory Board, refused to reinstate CSB again after that
uprising of CSB talk with Soong Tzu-yu. He has been very active all those
years since late 1950s up to this very moment.
Taiwanese, especially the so-called Taiwanese intellects, mostly learned to
extend their tongues to near 8-inch that is what Chinese usually have. They
talk by fully extending that length but never know how to fill that length
and capacity with new knowledge because they seldom read books and learn
from them. That is the only education system that Chiang Kai-shek and
Chinese authorities know how to.
Hope your posting will stimulate more Formosan to read books and articles
already published and readily available in markets. It is the most effective
way to elicit interest by Formosan and Taiwanese alike on their true past
and struggling history and try to forget what are written t and taugh by
Chinese who only believe Taiwan is a subset of China history but dare not to
touch Formosa that has an entirely different history. Chinese are clever not
to touch that old wound (history of deceits) that connects to China history
on Taiwan by talking even the word Formosa.
Thank you, again, and hope to read your postings continuously for however
long they last. Please also note I use Formosa and Taiwan separately. Taiwan
was named by Chinese nearly 180 years later after the Formosa appeared on
the World Map.
